Review: Checkmate (This is War) by Kennedy Fox

Checkmate: This is War
(Travis & Viola, #1)
Checkmate Duet #1

by Kennedy Fox

Travis King is the worst kind of asshole.
He taunts me for being a good girl and mocks my high standards.
He’s cruel, crass, and has enough confidence to last two lifetimes.
And I hate him.

It wouldn’t matter so much if he were avoidable.

But considering he’s my older brother’s best friend and roommate, I see him more than I’d ever want to.

His sculpted abs and gorgeous eyes are a waste on such an egotistical man, which makes me hate him even more.

Even though I’ve had a crush on him since I was ten, the feelings weren’t mutual and he’s always made that very clear.

He’s always loved getting under my skin and one night against my better judgment, I let him in my bed.

I’ve succumbed to his manwhore ways, but that doesn’t change a thing.

Because the King is about to get played at his own game—and lose.

Checkmate.

They started out as friends when they were kids, the rooftops their usual rendezvous. They were really close at the beginning, but as years passed by, so were their feelings. Viola Fisher had a major crush on Travis King who became her brother’s best friend. But this guy broke her heart on her 13th birthday. Viola learned with her fragile heart, that boys could never be trusted, that girls were just their playthings. Travis King was the number 1 jerk she had ever met, and that’s how it went until she was on her last year in college.

When they’re under one roof, they couldn’t stand each other, yet they’re unable forget about each other, either.  Two weeks of house fights and playing revenge had never been this fun and sexy and chaotic. Too much sarcasm, too much sexual innuendos, too many complications, and too hot to handle!

I can’t believe this is my first book by Kennedy Fox and I feel completely left out!! Most of my friends had been swooning about this talented duo and I’m glad I joined the bandwagon. Now I know why they tell me Brooke Cumberland and Lyra Parish are brilliant! Because they really are! Checkmate: This is War surely had my heart aching and breaking and dreaming and swooning.

Viola and Travis, Fisher and King. From enemies, to roommates to almost lovers to OMG, what kind of ending was that?!? I swear to all the goddesses I almost fell off my bed when that cliffhanger came upon me. My Kindle crashed on my forehead, no thanks to Travis King.

I can’t wait to read the sequel and finish the series.. Yay!!!!

P.S.

Is it weird that I call the main characters’ tandem as KingFisher? Isn’t there a bird called kingfisher? Anybody realized this while reading the book?? Or maybe it was just me.. 🤔🤔 Oh never mind me, I just need to read Book 2 immediately so I can come up with a better review. Peace! 😘
