Eve
Pretentious. Arrogant. Condescending. Cruel.
All words I’d used to label him. Exactly what I’d always believed he was. All that changed one spring morning when I realized I didn’t know the man behind the facade at all.
Angry. Desperate. Broken. Mine.
All words I’d use to define him after I interfered. Once our eyes locked, I was all in. There was no turning back. He tried to push me away, but I refused to let him go. I was determined to save him. What I didn’t expect was that he would save me, too.
Cy
I was so close to ending my misery. Mere seconds away. Then she stumbled upon our argument, and I changed my plans. She wasn’t supposed to be there. She knew too much. Even with my entire world burning down around me, she wouldn’t walk away.
I’ve always been on my own. No one had ever fought for me before. Why should anyone start now? But she did, no matter how much I tried to stop her. I knew I was nothing, unworthy of her, but she was persistent. Once she got under my skin, I couldn’t let her go, because where I end, she begins.

Pulling up to the cabin, I shut my truck off and go inside. Parker is in the kitchen making himself lunch.

“Sandwich?” he asks, holding one up.
“Sure.” I’ve only eaten half a danish in the last eighteen hours. I need food.
“You doing okay? You didn’t come home last night.”
I smile a huge fucking smile. “I’m doing great.”
“Look at you all happy. You must have found some hot woman last night and had a hell of a time.” He hands me the sandwich and starts to make another one.
I take a few bites to appease my stomach. “Hot woman, yes, and last night sucked, but this morning was great.”
“Okay, I’m going to need a few more details.”
“Something happened last night, and it fucked me up big time, so I left. I had to get out of here, and didn’t know where I was going until I ended up there.”
“Eve’s.” It’s not a question. He knows I would go to her. There’s nowhere else. No one I’d trust outside of Parker and her.
I nod. “When I got there, she wasn’t home, but I couldn’t bring myself to leave. After about an hour of me sitting on the stairs in front of her door, I heard her. She wasn’t alone. Her date was walking with her to her door.”
He raises his eyebrows. “Her date? I didn’t know she was dating anyone.” Parker and Evie have been talking a lot. They’ve become close.
“Finn Bradley.”
“No! Finn Fucking Bradley. I haven’t seen him in months.”
“Me, neither.” I take another bite of the sandwich and find a glass to get some water. “Anyway, Evie trips as she’s walking up the stairs and I catch her. She must have seen something on my face, because next thing I know, I’m in her apartment with the door shut while she gets rid of Finn.”
“Poor Finn. He didn’t stand a chance.”
“You don’t know that.”
“C’mon, Cy. There is no competing with you. Not in Eve’s eyes. It’s you she wants. She’s always asking me about you, wanting to make sure you are doing okay.” He never told me that.
“I didn’t know.”
“No, I did that on purpose. You didn’t need her in your head more than she already was. After what happened that night when I was having dinner with her, and you showed up, I didn’t like seeing you upset. You needed to get your head on straight after seeing her. Me talking about her all the time wouldn’t have helped you.”
“We’re dating.”
He smiles wide. “Look at how far you’ve come in six weeks. You’re with Eve, for fuck’s sake.”
“How far I’ve come? I’m still a fucking mess. I could be making a huge mistake by being with her, but I can’t stay away anymore. If last night taught me anything, it’s that I need her. I’m done pushing her away. She knows I’m fucked up, and she still wants me. I have no fucking clue why.”
“Because she cares about you, douchebag. She sees something special in you, and no matter how many times she tried to get you out of her head, she couldn’t. Same with you.”
“Then why the hell did she go out with Finn?”
“Six weeks, Cy. You couldn’t expect her to sit around forever. She is smoking hot, even if she doesn’t realize it. Someone was bound to ask her out.” I give him a hard look. He holds up his hands. “I have zero interest in her, outside of being her friend. Chill, dude.”
“I know.” I rake my hand through my hair. “I’m sorry. I get fucking crazy where she’s concerned.”
He feigns shock. “No!”
“Fuck you.” I throw the last bit of my sandwich across the kitchen at him.
“Okay, go back to your story. We drifted off course.”
“Right, so I crashed in her bed, but nothing happened. Well, we talked, we slept, and I had a nightmare, but she was in it this time.” Parker is the only other person to know of my nightmares, outside of my doctors. I normally wouldn’t have told him, but he’s had the unfortunate task of waking me on multiple occasions, now that I live with him.
“Shit. I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, so she woke me up, and then we left. We took my truck out to the falls and sat there to talk. One thing led to another and…”
“You fucked her in the river?”
“What? No! We talked, and I’m now in a committed relationship with her.”
“Get the fuck out! You have a girlfriend?” I nod. “Holy hell, I never thought I’d see the day.” He walks out to the deck, leaving the door open behind him. He cups his hands around his mouth and yells, “Look out world! Cy Revere has a girlfriend! Hell has officially begun to freeze over!”
“Would you get back in here, asshole?”
He comes inside, kicking the door shut behind him. Parker’s hand claps me on the shoulder. “I’m happy for you. Truly. It’s time you’ve had some good in your life. I’m just glad it’s Eve.”

One year.
It’s been one year since Agent Damian Trent left for Washington without a word.
One year since he’s seen her beautiful face.
One year since he’s heard his name on her lips.
He’s been recently called back to New York City on assignment, to catch a criminal who’s trying to infiltrate Sunset Reads. The last thing he expects is to work side by side with the woman he turned his back on.
Having her close is an unwanted distraction that he’s more than willing to ignore, if only she wasn’t so damn tempting.
Everything seems under control, until a night of feverish passion has him abandoning all thoughts of reason. Now, he will do everything in his power to get her back, and even more so to protect her.

Layla Reece wants nothing to do with the man who left her a year ago.
The man who took her heart with him, leaving her broken.
After a year of trying to forget Damian Trent, she is finally ready to move on.
But trying to forget him becomes a tedious task when he suddenly reappears in her life.
Although she fights to stay away, his magnetism is too strong and she finds herself giving into the deep timbre of his voice, and the strength and safety of his arms.
Staying away from Damian turns out to be futile, especially when his kisses consume her and his heart shatters the walls she spent so much time building.
Finding herself in danger, she now has to turn to the only man she trusts to keep her safe, but can she trust him enough to give him her heart once again?

He smiled wickedly and leaned in, bringing his face only inches away from hers. “What do you want to know, Miss Reece?”

Layla stared at those full, sensual lips, warmth spreading through her.

“Everything,” she replied breathlessly, her eyes widening when she realized she had spoken aloud.

He stared back at her parted lips while she spoke, and fought the urge to close the distance between them. After a brief moment, he smiled and leaned back. “I can tell you that I’m an only child. I can also tell you I grew up here in New York. In Brooklyn. Joined the military at eighteen.”

“How did you get recruited into the FBI?”

“I was a translator in the Special Ops unit. I graduated with two majors-”

“Two majors! Wow!” Her eyes showed genuine admiration.

“Don’t seem so surprised…” he teased.

“Oh…no…it’s just that, well you don’t really seem like…” she trailed off, not sure how to continue.

“Like a book worm?” He smiled.

“Well. Yes.” She played with her napkin nervously, her nerves catching up to her.

“And how do I seem, Miss Reece?”

Layla was briefly stumped by the question, but then pursed her lips in contemplation, mischief shining in her eyes.

“Rough around the edges,” she paused, taking in his demeanor, “definitely reserved…” Her eyes traveled along his strong jawline, making her way across his broad shoulders, and pausing slightly on the muscles of his chest before she brought her eyes back up to meet his. “Powerful,” she whispered.

He leaned in again. “Is that all?”

She smiled, a glint of amusement in her eyes. “Very Intelligent,” she finished, and took a sip of her drink, taking a quick glance at him beneath lowered lashes.

He stared at those green eyes. “You’re very observant, Miss Reece, and surprisingly rather bold.”

She smiled. “So I’ve been told.”

His eyes narrowed dangerously. “Have you also been told that you are very sexy, and that just by a glance from those emerald eyes you can make a man think deliciously, dark thoughts?” His voice was low and seductive.

Experience the world’s most enchanting and timeless love story—retold with a dark and realistic twist.

A BEAST LIVING IN THE SHADOW OF HIS PAST

Reclusive and severely scarred Prince Adam Delacroix has remained hidden inside a secluded, decrepit castle ever since he witnessed his family’s brutal massacre. Cloaked in shadow, with only the lamentations of past ghosts for company, he has abandoned all hope, allowing the world to believe he died on that tragic eve twenty-five years ago.

A BEAUTY IN PURSUIT OF A BETTER FUTURE

Caught in a fierce snowstorm, beautiful and strong-willed Isabelle Rose seeks shelter at a castle—unaware that its beastly and disfigured master is much more than he appears to be. When he imprisons her gravely ill and blind father, she bravely offers herself in his place.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Stripped of his emotional defenses, Adam’s humanity reawakens as he encounters a kindred soul in Isabelle. Together they will wade through darkness and discover beauty and passion in the most unlikely of places. But when a monster from Isabelle’s former life threatens their new love, Demrov’s forgotten prince must emerge from his shadows and face the world once more…

Perfect for fans of Beauty and the Beast and The Phantom of the Opera, Beauty of the Beast brings a familiar and well-loved fairy tale to life with a rich setting in the kingdom of Demrov and a captivating, Gothic voice.

Beauty of the Beast is the first standalone installment in a series of classic fairy tales reimagined with a dark and realistic twist.

Disclaimer: This is an edgy retelling of the classic fairy tale. Due to strong sexual content, profanity, and dark subject matter, including an instance of sexual assault committed by the villain, Beauty of the Beast is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

~ The East Tower ~

Arms sprang out from the darkness. They spun her full circle and slammed her body against the king’s portrait. Isabelle gasped, more in shock than from pain, as she stared into Adam’s deformed face. The lantern flickered behind his massive form, casting his cloaked body in silhouette. But she saw enough to know he was far from pleased. Rage and frustration radiated from his body like a palpable force.

“I warned you to stay out of here,” he said, his voice dangerously cold and deep. Those rugged vocals vibrated against her body and seeped into her marrow. “What part of forbidden didn’t you comprehend?” His voice lashed out from the darkness like a hurtled knife, and the word “forbidden” seemed to whisper another meaning altogether. Isabelle tried to answer but failed to find her voice. Indeed, her vocal cords had turned to solid ice, as numb and cold as the blood rushing through her veins. She couldn’t breathe; she felt like she was suffocating.

“My mother gave me that musical box on my fourth birthday,” he said, the sensual lull of his voice causing the fine hairs on her nape to stand erect. “And now your recklessness has destroyed it. Have you nothing to say?”

“I—I’m sorry.” He offered no reply; only the ragged sound of his breathing and the hammering blizzard broke the silence. “Please—I didn’t mean any harm.”

She struggled under the weight of Adam’s colossal body and battled to free herself. He merely gave a low chuckle and pressed her firmly against the portrait. He looked otherworldly at that moment, like an angel of death seeking vengeance. Both beautiful and monstrous, his cool, sapphire eyes overflowed with warring emotions. In spite of his harsh and ruthless exterior, she detected a quaver in his voice and saw that his large, cloaked shoulders trembled. The darkness in his soul cast a shadow that embraced her; as she peered up at him, she knew he was drowning in the turbulent waters of a past time.

“What a disappointment,” he went on, his voice growing deeper still, mocking her words from so many days ago, “You’re like any other woman.”

“I—I’m sorry. Please, Adam. I—” Her gaze shot past his body and over the wreckage of a past life. She thought of her private chamber again—of the stale perfumes and outdated garments.

Her flight or fight instinct seized hold of her. She attempted to scramble free, but he merely grabbed her shoulder and whirled her back against the portrait. Gloves wrapped his hands; his long, silk-clad fingers grasped her shoulder and kept her firmly in place.

He stood intimately close.

Far too close.

As close as Raphael had been that night.

“Going somewhere, ma belle? After you’ve worked so hard to find my East Tower?”

Hands like two steel bands held her wrists in place. Hot breaths, which faintly smelled of wine, seared her cheeks and assaulted her senses. Her breasts flattened against the pressure of his strong chest, and she felt that same chest swell and deflate in perfect sync with her own. One large hand slipped down her elbow and glided across her extended arm. The lush material of his gloves drew a shudder from her heaving chest. His breathing grew more ragged, shallower, and the erratic beat of his heart banged against her own.

Anger and desire warred on his face, twisting his features into a mess of both monster and man. “Find anything of interest, aside from my musical box? Come, come. You went through such great trouble to get here,” he asked, his voice now threaded with both anger and something else.

Yes, Isabelle recognized that something else. It was the same note that had entered Raphael’s voice that night…

She attempted to duck under his arm, but he moved swiftly, capturing her in the crook of his elbow. Reeling her toward him, he emitted a low, haunting chuckle that swelled the eastern tower to its rafters. She was back where she’d started—pinned against the portrait, Adam’s body serving as a flesh-and-blood blockade.

Hunger radiated from him, enfolding her in a current of sizzling power. His silk-clad hand grazed the curve of her breast as it moved down her body in a painfully slow caress. Even more alarming was her reaction to him. Her treacherous body responded with a crush of hot and cold pulsating waves. Then he whispered a taunt in her ear, and his liquid baritone slid down her backbone like honey; it swirled inside her, finding its home in her most intimate area.

He leaned closer still. His face’s uneven skin brushed against her neck, the black waves of his hair tickled her chin… His thick arousal expanded against her, reminding her of what he was capable of—and of her sheer vulnerability.

His lips teased the base of her throat. Cursing her traitorous body, Isabelle gasped at the gentle scraping of his teeth. His tongue and lips tormented her throbbing pulse—just barely, stirring her skin in a mere ghost of a touch.

Riley

“This or that?” Audrey asks.
I drum my fingers on the armrest as I think. “Music or movies?”
She glances at me sideways. “Music. Fiction or non-fiction.”
“Fiction. Dancing or singing?”
She laughs. “Dancing in the rain. Dancing on ice or falling on ice?”
“I practically danced on the ice tonight!” I snort. “I don’t fall…often.”
“I don’t mean that kind of dancing.”
“Like? A slow dance or something?” She nods. “And shall I ask Rob to be my partner?”
“Well, you could do a crazy one armed, one legged, booty shakin’ dance after a win,” she offers.
I laugh, loudly. “Where do you come up with this?” She shrugs a shoulder as she merges with interstate traffic. “In that case, fall. High heels or bikini wax?”
“You say fall because you’re a chicken. Do you even know what a bikini wax is?”
“If it’s like the name…then yes, and I’m not a chicken.”
“You are too, and I’d choose high heels. Feathers or snow?”
“You’d break your ankle! Snow. I’m still not a chicken,” I argue.
“I’d likely break both, but you are a chicken.”
“Will you stop calling me a chicken?”
The sound of her laughter centers me, I was meant to be right here with her. Just to hear her voice, her laugh…
“I will stop when you do a one armed, one legged, booty shakin’ dance on ice for me.” I hang my head. “Oh, and it has to be after a win, on home ice, and everyone has to see it.”
“Not gonna happen, Aud.”
“Same as usual, Chicken?” she asks as we pull into McDonalds drive-thru.
“Not a chicken, yes.”
“Okay.” She waits with the window cracked for an employee to take our order. A feminine voice comes through, asking what we’ll have. “One chocolate shake for the chicken and one vanilla shake for the tomboy,” she replies with a laugh.
“How many piece chicken nugget?”
Audrey laughs harder. “No chicken please, just the two shakes.”
“See, a sign you should knock the chicken shit off.”
“Not a chance, Chicken.” She clucks for good measure.
“No electricity or no plumbing,” I ask, hoping to pull her away from the teasing.
“No electricity, Chicken. One girl or all the girls?”
“One,” I say, burning a hole in the side of her head.
“Aw, a romantic chicken. I don’t think I’ve ever heard about one of those.” She tilts her face toward mine. Both of us just staring at the other, with very little space between us. My eyes fall shut and I lean back further into my seat. Way to make things awkward again, idiot. Chicken.
“Pink or purple?” I ask.
She groans, passing me the milkshakes the guy in at the window handed her. “Purple. Doer or dreamer?”
I chew on the inside of my cheek as I work the straws out of their wrappers. “Doer.” I’m too much of a dreamer. Or planner, but I don’t follow through.

 e055c-excerpt

All I knew was pain. It consumed me, its excruciating strength refusing to let my mind focus on anything else. I struggled, an unwilling passenger of my own mind, as I felt muscle being separated from bone and each individual tendon tear as they were twisted in a direction they were not meant to go. I suffered the deep throb of a bone being pulled from its natural joint. I wanted to give up and just let the agony overwhelm me until it hurt too much to

stay conscious. When my body could no longer take the torture, I would be free.

But before I could give in, my attacker made a crucial mistake. As he made another tug on my arm, a twinge shot through my shoulder forcing a strangled yelp from my mouth, and he laughed. The bastard stood there—I bet with a damn smirk on his face—and laughed.

Oh, hell no.

His laughter reached a part of me that I hadn’t noticed until that moment, a part of me that was literally fighting to get out and kick this guy’s ass. Anger fueled the adrenaline that now pumped through my body in full force. Muscles coiled and tensed in preparation to fight. My foe felt my change in posture and went to tug on my arm again, but I was already moving.

I let instinct guide my free hand right into his nose. The sickening crunch of breaking cartilage filled the air, but I didn’t have time to enjoy the

surprised look on his face before my well-practiced side-kick sent him flying toward the back wall of the gym. Reality came back to me slowly; I was still standing in a fighting stance, blood roaring in my ears, heart pounding in my chest, as I became aware of the other students in our training class.

Distance Yourself from Negativity

“You are an average of the five people you spend the most time with.” – Jim Rohn

Think about this for a moment. If you are watching the news every morning and every night before bed, you are book ending your day with negativity. The news is designed to instill fear in its audience. The media hooks us in and creates a desire in us to watch more. Social media is not much better. We constantly sit at our computers or on our phones and get caught up. We look at a few articles or catch up with an old friend, and suddenly we have fallen down a two-hour long rabbit hole of the political and social ranting of “friends”. Even the office isn’t safe. We go to the break room to get a coffee, and the next thing you know we are engaged in water cooler gossip about the receptionist’s bad haircut or the boss who’s cheating on his wife. Even our private social lives can be a hotbed for negativity. Our best friends tell us how terrible their marriages are, and we quickly find ourselves comparing stories about whose spouse is the most awful.
If we surround ourselves with negativity, it seems to seep into our spirits by osmosis. Soon, we let the uncontrollable events on the morning news run our emotions for the entire day. We feel we have to out- do our friends’ negativity with the negativity of our own. We get sucked into gossip and social media, and let other people’s problems affect our personal peace.
I remember watching a news story several years ago about the Chinese stock markets falling. The newscaster was in a panic, and so were the people he was interviewing. They were predicting major international fallout from this one-day drop. I took that panic with me to work that day. I was anxious, irritable, and short-tempered. Finally, a co-worker asked me what was wrong. I answered that the Chinese stocks had crashed, and our economy was going to take a punch for it. He laughed. It pissed me off, actually. I asked how he could be laughing when the economy was going to shit.
He asked, “Kelli, do you own Chinese stock?” I said I didn’t. He asked me, “Is this going to affect you directly?” After thinking about it, I said it probably would not. Then he smiled and asked, “Can you control any of this?” He was right. I laughed, then, too. I realized in that moment how worked up I had gotten over a fear-induced news story. None of it mattered. In the bigger picture of life, family, love, and all things important to me, the Chinese stocks falling for one day didn’t matter one bit. After taking back control over my own thoughts, my day turned out to be much better.
We can’t let people steal our happiness. People in this case include the media, our friends, coworkers, neighbors, social media, family, etc. Joy is a precious thing, and if you find yours being threatened by certain people or things, take a good look at where it is coming from and make the necessary adjustments. Decrease the time you spend with negative friends, cut back or eliminate the news you ingest, leave the room when the conversation turns to gossip, limit social media, and unsubscribe from negative news feeds. In general, eliminate the things that produce fear, judgment, or insecurity in you.

Action Steps

  1. Try something different. Eliminate or severely limit your intake of negative people, news, social media, and gossip for the next several days, and see how you feel. I stopped watching the news completely in early 2015, and I have not regretted that decision. If you can’t stay away, deactivate your social media accounts for a while.
Replace the negative with positive. Hang around more positive people over the next few days. Read only positive news stories. Read inspirational quotes and books. Print out spiritual passages or write out uplifting quotes (Pinterest is a great source for inspiration), and put them on your walls, desk, or your screensaver.
  2. Surround yourself with positive people, places, and things.
  3. Determine if the event that has you concerned is something you can control. If the situation is something you can control, then take the small steps necessary to make the change. If it’s something you can influence, talk to the right people or do what you can to influence the situation. Take the first step, and do something. If you decide it is something you can’t control, do your best to acknowledge your lack of control over the situation, accept the situation as it is in this moment, and let go of the worry around it.
  4. Over the next few days, listen to the words you speak and the stories you tell. Are they mostly negative? Mostly positive? Become aware of which group you fall into. Are you the negative person in the group or on social media? Are you the one bringing negativity into the office? If so, realize this and make adjustments to stop spreading negative energy.

PROLOGUE
I know what you want, what everyone wants, but I can’t give you that. I can’t give you a story full of roses and sunshine or a happily ever after. I can’t give you the rare miracle that comes at the last minute and makes everything all better. No… but what I can give you is the truth. I can give you every brutal bit of the reality that I lived through.
The highs and the lows. I can give you the good times, but with the good comes the bad.
If you think about it, there really is no happily ever after for any of us. There’s a happy for now, sure, but the truth is that in the end there is always someone left with heartache. Someone is left with their world being crushed by the loss of the one they loved the most. The only thing you really can do, is make sure it’s worth it. Make sure all of the memories you’ve made and the time you spent together…make sure the pain of the ending is worth it.
Because, even though love always ends in a tragedy, it’s up to you to make sure it’s a beautiful one.
After I died, I knew my love story was tragically beautiful.

Growing up on an old dirt road in the middle of nowhere, as a child Candis used her love for books as a way to escape reality (and her brother constantly trying to kill her–literally). She blames her love of all things Horror on being born on Friday the 13th and will always find joy in scaring her friends.

You will find a little piece of her in every book she writes. She loves a good happy ending but isn’t afraid to keep her stories real, even if that means telling the side of a story most people are afraid to tell.
Never caring for the norms or boundaries, Candis has written several genres from Horror to Erotica.
When she’s not writing or reading, she can usually be found chasing her children around or binge watching Netflix. She currently lives in Rome, Pennsylvania with her husband and three children.
