Snow in Summer
by Jane Yolen
Summer’s life in the mountains of West Virginia feels like a fairy tale–her parents dote on her, and she’s about to get a new baby brother. But when the baby dies soon after he’s born, taking their mother with him, Summer’s life turns grim. Things get even worse when her father marries a woman who brings poisons and magical mirrors into Summer’s world. Stepmama puts up a pretty face and Summer’s father is under her spell, but Summer suspects she’s up to no good–and is afraid she is powerless to stop her.
Yes, I actually recommend reading this book this coming Halloween! Why? Why not? Let me tell you… You’ve never seen Snow White like this…
Snow White’s twisted fairy tale will have your heart beating wild and scared. 💔 I wasn’t prepared for this kind of reimagined Snow, who preferred to be called Summer; from the beginning till the end, my heart cried out for her. 😭
Stepmama is as wicked as she could be, Fairy Godmother is nowhere to be seen, but there’s Cousin Nancy who protected Summer at all cost. Papa isn’t his old happy self, and Seven Dwarves were actually six short men who mine. The seventh, now he’s a mystery alright, someone you’ll love to meet and get to know in the end. For once, there isn’t a drop of fairytale magic in this story, but it’s got snakes and cauls and rowan branch. And oh, Mirror Mirror is here too, but he doesn’t say who’s the Fairest of them all..
Snow in Summer by Jane Yolen gave me the creeps! But I still loved it even if the snakes almost invaded my sleep. Tis a perfect book this Halloween!
A Snow White retell in a creepy Halloweeny way? oh, my gosh sounds good!
