Review: Wild Card by Karina Halle

Wild Card
(North Ridge Book 1)
by Karina Halle

Rough, raw & rugged.
As the man in charge at Ravenswood Ranch, Shane Nelson has never been afraid to get his hands dirty. His sculpted physique isn’t the product of a gym, but of years of hard labor under a relentless sun. His straightforward, alpha tendencies come from a man who knows what he wants and goes after it.
And what he wants is Rachel Waters.
He’s never stopped wanting her.
They were childhood best friends, then teenage lovers who evolved into soulmates. But on one fateful night, Shane made a grave mistake, breaking both their hearts in the process.
Now, after six years, Rachel is back in the small, wild mountain town of North Ridge, BC.
Ready to face her past.
Ready to face Shane.
Ready to face his dark secret.
But is a second-chance at a one true love in the cards? Or will their wild hearts be broken once again?

At age 9, Shane Nelson knew he was in love the moment he saw Rachel Walters. At age 12, they shared their first kiss. At age 16, they were officially in love.

And then one night, Shane broke her heart and Rachel left North Ridge and vowed never to return ever again.

Six years later, Rachel’s back, not for him, not for the place, but for her mother. Shane’s different now, more imposing, statuesque and definitely more gorgeous than ever. And now, she doesn’t know how to be around him anymore. She’s still hurting and she’s afraid, she’ll get hurt even more.

Karina Halle amazes me again with her extra hot and spicy and saucy cowboy romance, Wild Card. This book got all the ingredients needed for you to stay, settle and swoon until the end. I couldn’t put my Kindle down once I started reading it. Shane, in all his flaws and toughness, and imperfections, there still lies a selfless heart that made Rachel fall in love. I also fell in love with him. I loved that he was bold but was also quiet and gentle. I loved that he believed in wishbones and first loves. And I loved that he had his own way to make me laugh.

Rachel was commendable too, for her brave heart. What happened to her when she was younger was so overwhelmingly heartbreaking. I for one, was glad for her when she finally left North Ridge to escape it all. But I loved how she finally got her courage back up when she faced the man who torn her apart.

Overall, this was a beautiful love story meant to be shared and read and contemplated. Plus, I have a thing for cowboys and rescuers and firefighters, and Canadians (well, only a few, like Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling and President Trudeau) so I would definitely read the rest of the books in this North Ridge series. Shane Nelson got me swooning, so I expect Maverick and Fox to blow me away. Karina Halle is awesome!
