Review: The Originals 01 – The Rise

The Originals: The Rise (The Originals #1)Originals
by Julie Plec

It’s the year 1722. Ever since the siblings Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah Mikaelson landed on the shores of New Orleans, they have been fighting to claim the city as their own. They are the oldest vampires in the world, trying to share the city with the witches and the werewolves.

Enter Vivianne. Raised as a witch, she is betrothed to a werewolf for a union that should bring peace between the witches and the werewolves. She is the only girl in New Orleans off limits to the Mikaelsons. Klaus immediately plans to make Vivianne his own.

Can the vampires cling on to their territories in the city? Or will Vivienne and Klaus trigger a battle bigger than anything New Orleans has ever known?

I’ll be honest. The reason I requested for this book on Netgalley is because I am a BIG fan of Klaus & Joseph Morgan, the character and the actor. Even before when he was still in Vampire Diaries, I always looked forward to every episode that had Klaus in it. Plus with Damon & Stefan on the front lines, how can a series like this go wrong? In my opinion, TVD and The Originals have the perfect casting and I love the story even more.

Back to the book, The Originals is about the life of the original vampires, the Mikaelsons, particularly of Niklaus, Elijah and Rebekah. Their father hunted them down, bent on making them vanish because they are considered anathema to mankind. Each sibling had their backstory, how they long to have their own home, how they had fallen in love and got hurt, how the vampires and werewolves got involved, how they relayed their own thoughts and opinions, and how their love for family always prevailed.

Elijah, surprisingly captured my interest here, he was full of emotion and drive, he was the manifestation of an admirable brother more than anything else. Rebekah, oh poor soul, I think I was as devastated as her when she learned of a family betrayal. And Klaus, oh where do I start.. I think Klaus, as a whole was a force to reckon with. He was ruthless, smart, charming, cunning, sexy! He could be one, he could be all. How I wish I was Vivianne.

Obviously I’m a fan so I could go on and on with my platitudes, with my admiration to the Mikaelsons, with my obsession with everything Klaus. This is a highly recommended read for all Originals fans! Also, if you haven’t heard nor watch The Originals The TV series, this is the perfect time for you to start reading about them.
