Is Love Really Blind?

Is LOVE Really Blind?

Have you ever heard the song from Tiffany, the one entitled, If Love Is Blind? In case you are not aware, the song goes like this:

People say that you’re no good for me
People say it constantly
I hear it said so much I repeat it in my sleep
Maybe I am just a fool for you
Maybe you’re no angel too
But all that talk is cheap
When I’m alone with you
If love is blind
I’ll find my way with you
Cause I can’t see myself
Not in love with you
If love is blind
I’ll find my way with you

I often hear these three little words from people who are either madly in love or suffering from it. When I was a kid, I used to think that love is for the blind people. Growing up, I realized, I was wrong.

I learned that Blind Love really means that when you are truly, madly, deeply in love with someone, sometimes you do not see nor realize the things that are happening around you. Or maybe, they say that the person you are in love with doesn’t exactly fit your description of “beautiful or handsome”, but you still love him or her anyway.

But have you ever ask yourself, where did the phrase Love Is Blind came from? According to my research, it was actually coined by William Shakespeare during his time. The term appeared in several of his plays, including Two Gentlemen of Verona, Henry V and The Merchant Of Venice.

Here’s one example where the line came from: The Merchant Of Venice, 1596:

JESSICA:
Here, catch this casket; it is worth the pains.
I am glad ’tis night, you do not look on me,
For I am much ashamed of my exchange:
But love is blind and lovers cannot see
The pretty follies that themselves commit;
For if they could, Cupid himself would blush
To see me thus transformed to a boy.

Shakespeare said it himself. A love that is blind is a love that does not see the ugliness of the person but accepts the whole. Love doctors usually say that when you love, you need to take or receive the whole package of your significant other. You will accept him for who he is or was. It doesn’t matter what he or she looked like. You will have to see beyond their faults and flaws. In other words, to be blindly in love is to love unconditionally.
